PSA: My old iPod Classic's hard drive just gave up the ghost

I spent three evenings trying to get it to spin up again, only to find out the 1.8-inch drive is basically a lost cause now. Anyone know a good spot to get a compact flash conversion kit that doesn't cost a fortune?

Honestly, that quote is about right for a shop doing the work. The real kicker is finding the right CF or SD adapter board itself, some of the cheap ones have weird compatibility issues. I ended up buying a kit from a guy on eBay who tests them in actual iPods, it was the only way to be sure.

My local repair shop quoted me $120 for the flash kit and install. It's wild how these old drives are becoming museum pieces.

Wait, is it really that deep though? Like yeah the drives are old but calling them museum pieces feels like a stretch lol. For $120 charles_knight you could just buy a whole used ipod that already works. Seems like a lot of hassle for a music player.
