I dropped $800 on a thermal imaging camera for the shop last winter.

Some guys think it's a waste for checking mold temps, but it caught a hot spot in our main line before a blowout. Anyone run into something similar?

You're right about it catching that hot spot. I see it as a key tool, not a waste. It gives you a real picture of what's happening, not just a guess. That kind of info is worth way more than the cost of the camera.

Our shop's insurance guy said thermal data can sometimes lower your premiums. He told me they see it as a sign you're doing proactive maintenance. That's a hidden financial benefit people don't talk about.
