Old guy at the scrap yard told me to pre-heat my ladle with a torch before the pour

I always thought it was a waste of gas, but after a cold start yesterday my first three pours of 356 aluminum chilled way too fast and left voids. Tried his tip today and the fill was perfect, no cold shuts. Anyone have other simple tricks to stop casting defects?

Left voids" sounds dramatic but maybe your mold was just too cold. A lot of times it's about getting your whole process up to temp, not just one step. Could have been a fluke.

Ugh, that's the worst feeling when a pour goes wrong like that.
