Our big ladle crane gave out mid-pour yesterday afternoon, total mess.

The main hoist cable snapped right as we were filling a 500 lb mold for a gear blank. We had to scramble to divert the stream and lost about a third of the metal to the floor. What's the best way you guys check for cable wear before it gets to that point?

Just eyeballing it until it snaps seems to be the standard inspection method. Works every time, except when it doesn't.

Just eyeballing it until it snaps" is NOT a plan, that's how people get HURT. You lost a third of 500 pounds of metal to the floor? That is a terrifying amount of hot metal just going everywhere. We do a monthly check with a rag, running it along the cable to feel for broken wires you can't see. If it snags, you've got a problem. It takes two minutes and it beats a total failure.
