I used to think buying pre-cut veggies was smart, but my grocery bill told a different story

For years, I grabbed those bags of chopped onions and peppers thinking they saved time. My weekly food cost was about $120 for just me. That changed six months ago when I lost my job. I started buying whole vegetables and a cheap knife. Chopping them myself takes ten extra minutes, but I save nearly $15 a week. Now I put that money toward better ingredients. Has anyone else found a simple prep step that cut their costs way down?

Laura_white99 has a point about time value. But that ten minutes of chopping can be a mental break. It's active, not just staring at a screen. The money saved adds up to something real, like better meat or cheese. For me, that trade is worth it every time.

My time's worth more than that.

Do you really save that much time by not chopping though... I mean if you're already standing in the kitchen waiting for stuff to cook, that ten minutes isn't exactly lost. It's more like you're using the same time differently. Plus learning to chop fast actually saves you time in the long run, it's a skill that builds up. I'd rather spend ten minutes prepping than twenty minutes staring at my phone waiting for delivery.
