My grandma's 'depression soup' recipe I ignored for 15 years

My grandma always talked about this soup she made during the 70s with just water, a ham bone, and whatever vegetables were on sale. I always thought it sounded gross and bland so I never tried it. Last winter I had $12 left before payday and a half-used bag of lentils in the cupboard. I threw everything in a pot with that ham bone and some frozen mixed veggies and it was actually filling and tasty. Has anyone else discovered a passed over recipe from an older relative that surprised them?

Well that's about how long it took me to appreciate my own cooking, too.

Oh man @blake432, I gotta push back a little on that. It took me a solid 6 months of burning rice and oversalting everything before I started to even like what I made. My first few attempts at chicken were so dry my husband just smiled and said "it's fine" while reaching for the ketchup. I think respect for your own cooking comes way later than people admit, especially if you're comparing yourself to that one friend who somehow whips up restaurant quality meals on a Tuesday night. Honestly I still have those days where I take one bite and just sigh, but you gotta keep at it.
