Tried to make my own yogurt to save cash, turned into a whole weekend project

I followed a simple recipe online that said it would take about 8 hours. My first batch came out runny, so I tried again with a different starter. The second batch was too sour. I finally got a good thick batch on my third try, which took about 36 hours total with all the waiting and testing. Anyone have a foolproof method that doesn't take days to figure out?

Honestly think you're missing the point of making your own stuff. That whole process of messing up and figuring it out is the whole fun part. If you just wanted perfect yogurt fast you should have bought it. The weekend project is the reward, not a waste of time. Getting it right on the third try is actually a huge win, most people give up.
