I'm done with bosses who focus on speed over skill in our finishing shop.

But isn't speed built on skill in the first place? Rushing just leads to reworks that kill your time anyway. What's the point of fast if it's always wrong?

Yeah but the pressure for speed isn't always about skill, it's about the type of work. If I'm just filing down weld seams on parts that get painted over, going faster doesn't really hurt the quality. Some jobs just need to move.

See what you mean about some jobs just needing to be done fast. But even filing weld seams can go wrong if you rush. You might miss a deep pit or leave a sharp edge that shows through the paint later. Speed comes from knowing exactly how much pressure to use and when to change your file, not just from moving your hand quicker. Getting that right the first time is still a skill that keeps things moving without callbacks.
