My stain can lid decided to become a permanent part of the can yesterday

I was opening a fresh quart of General Finishes gel stain in my garage, and the metal lid just SNAPPED off the ring. The whole top stayed on, and I had to pry it off with a flathead screwdriver, which sent a little spray of walnut stain onto my work shirt. Has anyone else had a brand new can just fight them like that? What's your go-to method for a stuck lid that won't budge?

Actually, that's pretty normal for a sealed can.

But is it really a big deal though? Seems like a small thing to worry about.
