My wife asked why the kitchen table smelled like a pickle jar for a week
I was refinishing an oak table in the garage. Used a new brand of stripper, the green gel kind. Rinsed it off with plain water like the can said. Finished it with two coats of poly. My wife kept saying the kitchen smelled weird, like vinegar. Took me three days to realize the stripper left a chemical residue that reacted with the poly. Anyone else run into a finish that just won't stop smelling?

Wait you rinsed a chemical stripper with just water? That's wild, the residue must have been insane. No wonder it reacted and stank up the place.

Water rinses off plenty of stuff just fine, actually.

Oh man, that green gel stuff is notorious for soaking into porous wood if you don't neutralize it right. Water just pushes it deeper rather than lifting it out. You probably needed something like a mineral spirits wipe down before the poly to stop that chemical ghost.
