Vent: Told me paste wax was better than lacquer for tabletops. 18 months of regret.

My uncle Bob who restores antiques swore up and down that paste wax was the only way to finish a dining table. Said lacquer was for amateurs who couldn't be bothered with maintenance. So I used his wax on a $1200 walnut table I built for a client in Portland. Fast forward through 18 months of water rings, heat marks, and re-waxing every 3 months. The client finally called me pissed off because her kid's juice cup left a permanent stain. Switched to a matte conversion varnish last month and the difference is night and day. Has anyone else had a family member hand down garbage advice that cost you real money?

That "only way to finish" line from Uncle Bob would've cost me my reputation too if I hadn't switched to conversion varnish after a similar disaster. Your mileage may vary, but in my experience, wax belongs on antiques you're barely touching, not on tables that see actual daily life.
