Hot take: I replaced my smart thermostat with a basic dial model after it locked me out of my own heat for a weekend.

Maybe the problem was the specific brand or setup. A good smart thermostat shouldn't just fail like that, they have battery backups and manual overrides. The convenience of adjusting my house temp from bed or while I'm out is worth way more than a single bad weekend. Going back to a basic dial feels like giving up on a ton of useful control for one bad experience.

Yeah I get what @olivia554 is saying, but mine totally bricked during a freeze last year lol. I swapped it for a simpler programmable one, still lets me set a schedule without the app headaches.

Used to be all in on smart thermostats myself, honestly thought anyone who didn't have one was just behind the times. Then mine decided it was too smart for its own good during a heatwave last summer. Took three days to get the app to recognize the house was 90 degrees inside and by then the AC was running nonstop anyway. Battery backup didnt help because the wifi was out from the storm, and the manual override was hidden behind three menu screens. All that convenience you're talking about vanished the second something went wrong, and I was stuck with a fancy paperweight. Now I've got a dumb thermostat that just does heat and cold, and honestly not having to worry about a phone update breaking my AC is worth more than being able to tweak the temp from my couch.
