Painted my kitchen cabinets without sanding first
Sanded half of them, then said screw it and used liquid deglosser on the other half. Six months later the deglosser side is chipping off and the sanded side looks perfect - shoulda just rented the orbital sander for 40 bucks.

Deglosser is a gamble I won't take again. Sanding doesn't lie unlike those liquid shortcuts. You paid the price for skipping a step and learned the hard way.

That deglosser got me too last year on a cabinet job. Had to strip everything and start over, learned that sanding is the only real way.
