Read a report that changed how I see attic insulation

I was looking through some old energy audit papers for my house in Tacoma and found a note about attic insulation. It said that adding just 6 inches of blown-in cellulose can cut heating bills by up to 20% in our climate. I always thought you needed a foot or more to see real savings. This was from a local utility's guidebook from 2019. It made me check my own attic, and sure enough, I'm way under that in a few spots. Has anyone else had a similar surprise from an old home report?

Wow that's so true, it's wild how often the basic fixes get overlooked. I see it all the time with houses, people go for fancy systems but skip the simple stuff like sealing drafts or adding a bit more insulation. That report finding a big win from just six inches proves the point. We get sold on needing the biggest solution when sometimes the small change is what really moves the needle.

But 20% seems high for just six inches.
