Dealing with a bad car repair estimate took me 4 weeks too long

I brought my 2015 Honda into a shop near downtown for a weird grinding noise and they quoted me $1,100 for brake work I wasn't sure I needed. Spent three more weekends getting second opinions and watching YouTube videos before I realized the guy was trying to upsell me on calipers that were totally fine. Anyone else run into a mechanic who padded the estimate and how did you catch it?

Double check them with a micrometer, @stone.simon, odds are they're not bad.
