PSA: My landlord tried to keep my whole $1200 deposit for 'cleaning'

My old roommate said to always take pictures when you move out, so I did. The landlord claimed the place was a mess and sent me a bill. I sent him my photos with timestamps from the day I left. He backed down and returned the full amount in under a week. Has anyone else had to fight for a deposit with just photos as proof?

Your roommate gave you great advice. Photos are the best defense, especially with timestamps turned on. I always do a video walkthrough too, talking through each room and pointing out any existing damage. Landlords bank on tenants not having proof, so having that evidence ready shuts it down fast. It's saved me a couple thousand dollars over the years.

Yeah, the video walkthrough talking through each room is key. I did exactly that at my last place, pointing out the cracked tile in the bathroom and the stain on the carpet under the window. When they tried to charge me for it later, I just sent the file. @dakotab13 is right, they just go quiet when you have the proof ready to go. It turns a big fight into nothing.
