Rant: I thought I could handle my own small claims case without a lawyer
I was suing my old landlord in Austin for my $1200 security deposit he just kept. I figured it was simple, I had pictures and texts, so I filed the papers myself. I got to court and the guy showed up with a lawyer who started asking me super specific questions about Texas property code sections I'd never heard of. The judge kept looking at me like I was an idiot because I didn't know the right legal words for things. I realized right then that thinking 'the truth will win out' is naive when the other side knows the rules of the game and you don't. That one morning cost me my whole case and taught me a harsh lesson. Has anyone else gotten totally blindsided in court by not having even basic legal advice first?
