Choosing between a rock hammer and a masonry chisel for a stubborn piece of granite

I was trying to get a clean sample from a granite outcrop near Boulder. The rock hammer just bounced off, but a $15 masonry chisel from the hardware store let me work along a fracture line. What do you use for really hard, uncooperative rocks?

A cold chisel and a small sledge worked for me on some brutal basalt.

My last attempt at splitting a rock with a chisel ended with me hitting my own thumb. Had to explain the purple nail to everyone for a month. Honestly, I think the rock was laughing at me.
