My cousin told me to bring a magnet on my hike through the Adirondacks

He said it would help me spot iron-rich rocks like magnetite, and I thought it sounded silly... but I tried it last month. I found a small black rock that stuck right to the magnet near a stream bed. It was my first time finding magnetite in the wild. Has anyone else had luck with this trick for other types of rock?

Works on some meteorites too, which is just wild.

Read about a lab using it on the Allende meteorite. They found amino acids, the building blocks for life, just sitting there in space rock.

I mean, cool party trick for sure, but how many people are actually out there hunting for space rocks? Feels like a fun gimmick for a hike, not a serious geology tool.
