My cousin's kid asked me why some rocks are sparkly and others are just gray

I was showing him a piece of granite and a piece of slate from my driveway in Portland, and he said 'the sparkly one looks like it's full of secrets.' It made me realize I'd stopped seeing the wonder in the basic stuff. What's a simple rock fact that still amazes you?

Kid's right, the sparkly ones are definitely hiding something.

Used to think it was just a fun design choice, nothing deeper. Then my niece got a set of those glittery gel pens for her birthday. The gold one looked amazing but ran out of ink in two days, while the plain blue one from the same pack is still going strong months later. Now I'm convinced the sparkle is a trick to cover up cheap parts or less ink. The kid has good instincts.

Lindahunt's probably right, sparkly rocks are just geology's clickbait.
