My uncle said to always check the creek bed after a big rain, and he was right

When I was a kid, my uncle, who was a big rockhound, told me the best time to hunt for agates was right after a heavy spring storm washed through the creek near our place in Oregon. I mostly forgot about it until this past April, after three days of solid rain. I went down to the usual spot and the water had moved so much gravel around. Right on top, clear as day, was a perfect little blue lace agate I'd walked past a dozen times before. What's the best piece of advice you've gotten for finding cool rocks?

That's solid advice. Read somewhere that looking downstream from bends or big rocks is key, since heavier stuff drops out there first. Found a decent chunk of jasper that way last fall.

I found a nice piece of petrified wood in a bend on the Little River last spring. That downstream trick really works, especially after a good rain when the water moves things around.
