Question about calling all river rocks 'skipping stones'

I keep hearing folks at the lake in Muskoka call any smooth rock a skipping stone, but the flat, disc-shaped ones work way better. How do you pick the right ones?

Forget the shape, just test the spin by flicking it in your palm first.

Used to be all about the shape. Then saw someone do the palm flick thing. Totally changes how you feel the weight shift. Makes way more sense now.
