Shoutout to the park ranger at Zion who pointed out the cross-bedding in the sandstone

He mentioned how the angle of those layers tells you which way the wind was blowing 200 million years ago, which made me see every rock face as a story instead of just a wall.

Wasn't there a study about using those same cross-bedding patterns to find ancient water sources on Mars? I read that geologists look at the dip angle in satellite images to guess where old riverbeds might be. It's wild that the same rules from Zion apply on another planet.

But how do they tell it apart from wind patterns?

That's a big leap from looking at rocks to finding water. Satellite images can show shapes, but they don't prove anything flowed. It could just be wind patterns or something else entirely. They've been guessing at water on Mars for decades with little real proof. Seems like they're always finding "clues" that never really pan out.
