A guy at the Portland studio asked if my glass pumpkin was a failed attempt at a bowling ball

I was finishing a big orange pumpkin piece at the public studio last fall, and this new guy, Mark, walked over and stared at it for a full minute. He finally said, 'So, is this a practice run for a bowling ball or did you just give up halfway?' I had to explain it was actually supposed to be a pumpkin, which made it even funnier. Has anyone else had someone totally misread a piece you were really proud of?

Oh man, that's hilarious. I just laughed it off when someone said my coiled vase looked like a weird snail shell. Sometimes people just see what they see, you know?

My buddy Dave had this amazing twisted metal sculpture that looked like a dancer to him. Some lady at the show walked right up and asked how long it took to make his "modern art trash can." He said his face just fell, he worked on that thing for months. It's wild what people's brains decide something is before they even ask.

That "modern art trash can" comment would gut me too. People can be so quick to judge without even trying to see it.
