I used to think a dry cut was always better for curly hair

A client came in with tight coils that were always frizzy after a wet cut, so we tried cutting it dry first. Over two months, she kept it up with the right products, and the shape held so much better. Seeing her come back with defined, bouncy curls instead of a triangle shape changed my whole approach. For anyone who works with a lot of natural texture, have you found a specific technique that helps with shape retention?

Wait, @ruby_gonzalez's sister had the same problem?

Totally get that. My sister has type 4 hair and her stylist switched to dry cutting for the same reason. The shrinkage from a wet cut was just wrecking the shape. Now her curls actually sit right and the layers do what they're supposed to.

It's wild how many stylists still default to wet cuts for curly hair. That method basically sets you up for a surprise when your hair dries and shrinks up. A dry cut lets you see the real shape and weight of the curls as they actually live. My last haircut was dry and it was the first time my layers didn't just vanish into a triangle shape. It makes such a basic difference for curl definition and how the style holds day to day. More stylists really need to learn this as a standard for textured hair.
