Backyard find puts me in a bind over local history

I dug up some old coins and a broken tool while planting trees. They look like they might be from early settlers here. Now I am not sure who should get these items. My town museum wants them for a display. But I heard a family nearby might have ties to this stuff. Keeping it feels wrong, but giving it away might not be right either. Have you ever faced a choice like this with historical finds?
