Overheard a guy at a taco stand say he eats 'naturally fermented' surströmming

Last weekend at a taco spot in Austin, this dude was bragging to his friends about trying surströmming straight from the can, no water rinse or anything. He acted like it was some badge of honor. It got me thinking, some foods are labeled 'strange' for a reason, and maybe there's a line between adventurous and just asking for trouble. Has anyone here tried the real deal and actually enjoyed it, or is it all just showing off?

Oh man, I can't handle my own cooking half the time, let alone fermented fish. I once tried to make an Instagram-worthy "adventurous" meal and ended up with a kitchen that smelled like a wet sock for three days. That surströmming dude is probably still burping up last week's taco stand bravado, but hey, at least he's not me crying over a burned quesadilla.

Wait, surströmming’s not a taco topping, that’d be a whole other level of wrong.
