AI translation vs human translators - the quality drop I'm seeing
I used to use human translators for my small business site, spending about $200 per page for Spanish and French. Last 6 months I switched to GPT-4 and DeepL for speed, but the nuance is gone - stuff like slang from Mexico City reads totally wrong in Madrid. Is the cost savings worth losing local flavor, or am I just using these tools wrong? What's your experience been with AI translation quality compared to real people?

is it really that big of a deal though? i mean yeah slang is gonna be different between regions, but if youre just talking about product descriptions and basic site text, does it really matter if it sounds a little off in madrid? lol. most people are just scanning the page for prices and contact info anyway. i feel like the cost savings would way outweigh getting a few idioms wrong here and there, especially if you just proofread the ai output yourself for a couple minutes

Did you catch that piece in the MIT Tech Review last month about how AI translations still mess up simple stuff like "out of stock" in Spanish? I saw @anthony426 mention proofreading the output, but honestly a couple minutes won't catch the weird phrasing that makes local customers bounce. My buddy runs a small shop in Barcelona and he tried that shortcut, ended up spending way more time fixing complaints than he saved on the AI.
