My neighbor thinks his smart speaker is gossiping about him at 3am
He cornered me by the mailbox Tuesday and swore his Echo told him it knew what he did with the thermostat. I laughed, but then I sat down and started wondering what these things actually keep stored, so does anyone here know how long the recordings stick around?
Amazon says they keep voice recordings for 90 days before deleting them by default, but the thing is those get saved to the cloud and tied to your account. I read that you can go into the Alexa app and delete them one by one or set it to auto delete every 3 months. The weird part is the device also keeps some stuff stored locally so it can learn your voice, and that part doesn't always wipe the same way. Tell your neighbor to check his app before he starts blaming the speaker for snitching on his thermostat.
