A guy in my anime club told me I skip too many openings and now I watch them all

Last month I was rewatching One Piece for the 3rd time and this dude named Tom called me out for clicking the skip button on the Wano arc opening. He said I was missing the whole mood and buildup that the director intended. I didn't believe him at first, but I sat through the next one and noticed the animation actually tells a mini story before the episode. Now I don't skip a single opening, even on shows I've seen before. Has anyone else had a fan change how you watch something?

Oh man, I've been there. Back when I was getting into JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, a friend made me watch the Stardust Crusaders OP all the way through and I finally noticed how the characters change positions in the intro as the story progresses. Now I won't skip anything on a first watch, your mileage may vary but I find that even bad openings can grow on you if you give them a chance. The thing is, a lot of these directors and animators put real thought into those 90 seconds, so you might be missing subtle foreshadowing or character beats. My advice would be to treat the OP as part of the episode itself, not just something to get through. I've actually started noticing little details in the background or lyrics that tie into later plot points, and that just makes the payoff better.

Noticed the same thing with coffee shop logos changing seasons.
