Classic anime pops up in new show talks more than I expected

Lately, I see a lot of threads where people bring up shows like 'Death Note' when discussing newer thrillers. (It's a great series, but it feels like a default reference point.) This makes me wonder if we're missing out on what makes the new anime special. For example, in a chat about 'Psycho-Pass', most comments just compared it to 'Death Note' instead of talking about its own ideas.

It's like when people hear a new rock band and immediately say "they sound like Green Day." We do this with everything, movies getting called "the new Die Hard" or books called "the next Harry Potter." It's just a lazy shortcut that stops us from seeing what's actually fresh about the new thing. We use the old classic as a measuring stick instead of letting the new show stand on its own.

Spot on with that. People always reach for the easiest comparison instead of actually listening. It kills the chance for something new to make its own mark right from the start. We end up with a bunch of copies in our heads instead of original stuff.
