Finding subbed anime used to mean hunting down bootleg VHS tapes at conventions
Back in the late 90s I'd drive two hours to a mall in New Jersey just to find a single tape of Record of Lodoss War, now I just pull up Crunchyroll on my phone during lunch. Anyone else miss the thrill of digging through those cardboard bins at anime cons?

Man that's rough but I've been there. I once drove 4 hours round trip for a copy of The Abyss on VHS and the tape was chewed up in the first 10 minutes. What I started doing is asking sellers to test the tape before I leave if they're close enough. Or if they're far out, ask for a video of them fast forwarding through a few minutes to check for crinkles or squeaking. Also grab some white lithium grease or a dry lubricant spray for the VCR, sometimes a little maintenance saves a tape that looks toast. It's still a win if you enjoy the hunt though.
