My buddy told me my 'top 10 anime' list was just a rehash of the same three shows everyone talks about.
He said, 'You're just picking the big shonen hits, where's the weird stuff you actually watch at 2 AM?' so now I always throw in one wild card pick, like 'Kaiba' or 'Sonny Boy', to spark a real talk.

Yeah, that wild card pick is the best part of any list.

Totally! It's like the one spot where you can throw in a curveball that makes the whole list feel personal. Like a best movies list that ends with a weird B-movie you love, or a top albums list that sneaks in a random live EP. That wild card shows the list has a real human behind it, not just a boring ranking.

The wild card is the ONLY thing that makes a list worth reading. Everyone knows Dragon Ball Z is good, nobody expects you to drop "Mind Game" or "Cat Soup" in there. That's when you see if someone actually watches anime or just follows the crowd. A top ten without something that makes people go "what the hell is THAT" is just a Wikipedia article.
