My whole anime watch party got spoiled because of a bad subtitle file
I was hosting a viewing for the new season of 'Frieren' last Saturday with four friends. We were about twenty minutes into episode 5 when the subtitles suddenly jumped ahead and revealed a major character death. Everyone just groaned. I had downloaded the file from a fansub site I used for years, but this time they messed up the timing. We had to stop, find a different source, and restart, which killed the mood for about an hour. Has anyone else had a subtitle disaster ruin a first watch?

My old roommate's bootleg DVD of Akira had the subtitles for a completely different movie. We watched twenty minutes of cyberpunk chaos with dialogue about a wedding.

That's the best kind of bootleg error. It feels like we're living in a world of constant subtitle fails now. Like when a news chyron gets a name totally wrong or a menu translation describes chicken as "angry bird without shoes." The wires are just crossed everywhere, giving us these weird, accidental art pieces. Your Akira wedding is a perfect example.
