Saw a panel at Anime Expo that changed how I watch seasonal shows

I was at Anime Expo last July and sat in on this small panel about the production side of anime. The guy on stage showed a timeline of how a typical 12-episode season gets made. I had no idea that most studios are still working on episode 10 while episode 1 is airing. It honestly explained so much about why some shows drop in quality halfway through. He also mentioned that delays usually come from the key animator stage, which is wild to think about. Has anyone else been to a production panel that totally shifted your view on a show you liked?

Went to a similar panel back in 2019 at Sakura-Con and they showed the same kind of chart, so I get where you're coming from. It honestly made me feel bad for the staff more than anything, knowing episode 5 might look great only because they had three extra weeks on it, while episode 8 was basically drawn in a weekend. I think the key animator bottleneck is about there only being a small pool of people who can actually do the hard cuts, and studios all fight over the same fifty names every season. That explains the rough action scenes you mentioned, you get a guest animator who's good but not used to the show's style, or a regular one who's been pulled off another project and is running on no sleep. I've stopped judging shows so hard at episode 7 now, they're basically making it as they air it and we're lucky we get anything at all.

Wait, the key animator stage? That's wild because I always figured it was the in-betweeners or the coloring people who caused bottlenecks. Do you remember if he explained why key animators specifically are the ones holding things up? Like is it because they're the most expensive or because there just aren't enough experienced key animators to go around? Because I've seen some shows where the action scenes look rough in episode 7 but fine in episode 1, and now I'm wondering if that's the same key animator getting rushed or a different person who came in last minute.
