Showerthought: I realized the best way to get a real answer about a show's quality is to ask 'what's the worst episode' instead of 'is it good'
After getting burned by three different hype trains, I started asking that specific question on the MyAnimeList forums and it filters out the fanboys who just say 'everything is perfect' lol, anyone else have a better trick for cutting through the noise?

That's a smart way to go about it. My own trick is to ask if the show has any filler, but your method is probably better. It forces people to actually judge the material instead of just praising it. I should try that, maybe then I'll stop starting shows that have one great episode buried in twenty boring ones. My watchlist is full of my own bad choices.

Tell me about it. I got burned by that exact thing with that big fantasy show everyone loved. People kept saying it was perfect, but then you get to season five and it's just people walking and talking in circles for ten episodes. Now I ask what the worst season is right away. If they say "they're all good," I know they're just fans, not critics. Saved me from starting three different space operas last month that apparently have whole seasons of filler.

My trick is to ask if it has a 'skip list.' If someone has made a guide on which episodes to avoid, that tells you everything. My own watch history is basically a museum of bad choices I was too stubborn to quit. I sat through an entire season of a mecha show that was just about filing paperwork because I kept waiting for it to 'get good.'
