Stumbled on the fact that Dragon Ball Z was almost a baseball anime

I was reading this old interview with Toriyama from the 90s I found on a fan site yesterday. Apparently before settling on the whole martial arts and alien thing, he seriously considered making the series about baseball instead. There were even early character designs with Goku in a baseball uniform. I can't wrap my head around how different anime history would be if he went that route. Anyone else run into weird early concepts for famous shows?

Wouldn't surprise me if they scrapped it because baseball fights don't hit as hard as ki blasts do.

Baseball fights don't hit as hard as ki blasts do" is the understatement of the century. Imagine Goku powering up to Super Saiyan just to try and hit a fastball. "KAAAAA-MEEEEE-HAAAAA-MEEEEE..." and then he just swings a bat. Or Vegeta screaming about his pride while arguing about a called strike three. Honestly though, I'd watch a spinoff where Yamcha actually becomes good at something and it's just pro baseball.
