That 2-season time skip in Vinland Saga totally flipped my opinion on Canute
Watching him go from that scared kid hiding behind Thorfinn to this cold ruler in just 2 episodes made me realize character development can actually work when the show earns it through smart storytelling instead of just telling us he changed, has anyone else had a show completely change your mind on a character that fast?

Thing is, Canute wasn't even all that different from his old self deep down he just stopped pretending he didn't see the bigger picture. His quiet, observant nature from season one was always there, but now he uses it to manipulate kingdoms instead of just surviving. Makes you wonder if characters really "change" or if we just finally get to see who they always were.

Idk if this is gonna sound weird but what hit me hardest wasn't Canute becoming cold its how he started using silence the same way he used to hide behind Thorfinn. In season one he was quiet because he was scared. In season two he's quiet because he's listening and learning everyone's weaknesses. Same exact trait just flipped into a weapon. Made me realize showrunners can keep a character's core personality intact while still making them feel totally different. Kinda scary how little it takes to turn a soft trait into a manipulative one. Maybe that's what real growth looks like sometimes not changing who you are but learning how to use it against people.
