Unpopular opinion: subbed vs dubbed arguments are pointless now
Was at a con last year and overheard two guys almost getting into a fight about which version of Akira was better. One dude was screaming about lip flaps. The other was yelling about voice acting. I just walked away. Both versions are fine. Stream it however you want. Does anyone actually care about this debate anymore?

Nah fr the whole debate is dead at this point. Sub vs dub was a real thing like 15 years ago when dubs were actually trash but now both sides have solid options. Streaming changed everything too cuz you can literally switch between them mid episode if you want. The Akira argument is especially funny since the 2001 dub was a massive revamp that most people agree is good, so even that example falls flat. People just need something to gatekeep or feel superior about, that's all this really boils down to.

Drop the whole quality argument and look at it from a language learning angle instead. That sub vs dub debate goes away real fast when you realize people watch anime for totally different reasons these days. Some folks are literally using it to study Japanese, so subs are non-negotiable for them. Other people got adhd or dyslexia and reading subtitles for 20 minutes straight is actually a nightmare, so dubs are a necessity not a preference. The gatekeeping thing is definitely real but I think the bigger blind spot is assuming everyone watches the same way for the same reasons. Accessibility is a huge factor that nobody ever brings up in these slap fights. Once you realize some people literally cannot watch subs due to vision issues or processing disorders, the whole superiority complex looks kinda ridiculous.
