Last month a retired carpenter named Frank watched me struggle with a miter saw in Home Depot, then walked me through a simple jig for cutting crown molding flat.

He showed me how to flip the board upside down and adjust the bevel angle the other way, which saved me from ruining a $60 piece of oak, has anyone else gotten random advice from a stranger that actually worked?

Frank had me rethinking that old "measure twice, cut once" stuff.

My grandpa once measured three times and still cut wrong.
