My neighbor's 40 foot fence build turned into a 3 day siege

Went to check out his progress and he had a full trench dug around the perimeter like a castle moat, turns out he hit a buried gas line and had to hand dig the whole thing with a shovel. He said the gas company charged him $600 for the emergency reroute, has anyone else dealt with surprise utility lines mid-build?

Man, that sucks. $600 is brutal for something you didn't even know was there. I've seen guys hit sprinkler lines and that's a mess, but gas is a whole different beast. Your neighbor got off easy compared to some horror stories where you're waiting days for the utility crew. At least he's got a good story out of it, I guess. Plus, that trench is basically a moat now, so there's that.
