Rant: I built my raised beds out of free pallet wood and the dirt sank 8 inches by August
So about 3 years back I got a pile of free pallet wood off a guy on Craigslist in Fresno and figured I'd save some cash on garden beds. I built four boxes, each about 4 foot by 8 foot, lined the bottoms with cardboard to kill the grass, and filled them with a mix of topsoil and compost from the city yard. Sounded smart at the time. By the middle of July the soil had dropped almost 8 inches in every box and my tomatoes were sitting halfway down in these wood canyons. Turns out pallet wood warps and the gaps let soil wash out every time I watered, plus the compost broke down way faster than I expected. I ended up hauling in another 2 yards of dirt the next spring to top everything back off. Now I'm looking at cedar boards and wincing at the price. Has anyone here built with pallets and actually had the beds hold up past a couple seasons, or is that just a Pinterest myth?
