Spent 6 hours leveling a 12x16 shed pad only to find out my string line was off by 2 inches
Do you go with a laser level for precision or stick with the old school string and stake method knowing it might cost you another Saturday?

Man I feel your pain! I just read an article in Fine Homebuilding that said even pros mess this up sometimes. They talked about how string can sag and stretch especially if it's hot or humid out. But here's the thing that got me, they claimed that laser levels have their own problems like batteries dying and the beam being hard to see in direct sun. I dunno, seems like both ways can bite you. I've been thinking about getting one of those rotary lasers but then I wonder if it's just another thing to fiddle with. For a shed pad I'd probably stick with string but check it with a tape measure every few feet.

How often do you actually check that string against a known straight edge before starting?
