The deck I toured in Portland made me question my railing choice
Went to a friend's place off Division Street last weekend and they built their deck with black iron cable railing instead of the usual cedar spindles. Cost them about $1,100 in materials and it took a full Saturday to tension everything. Am I the only one who thinks wood rails look dated now, or is cable just a maintenance trap in rainier climates?

Funny how everything in home design is swinging toward that clean, modern look lately, even in places like Portland where it rains all the time. Cable rails do look sharp and open up sightlines, but I’ve seen enough rust spots on neighbors’ sets to know the upkeep is real. Wood spindles might feel older, but at least they don’t need a wrench every spring.
