Unpopular opinion: my $600 concrete paver patio in Raleigh is holding up better than my neighbor's $2,800 stamped slab
Two summers ago I poured a simple 12x14 paver pad in my backyard and my neighbor went with a fancy stamped concrete job, and now his is cracking while mine still sits level, so I want to know if I just got lucky or if stamped concrete in hot humid climates is genuinely a bad bet.
Two summers is nothing man, talk to me when it's been ten. My uncle poured stamped concrete in Wilmington back in like 2010 and it's still fine, so I wouldn't blame the stamped part at all. The real question is what's under the slab, because if his base was packed wrong or he skipped expansion joints, that crack has zero to do with the stamp. Yours could just as easy be sitting on better soil, or draining better, or he might have poured his too wet on a 95 degree day which is a recipe for trouble no matter what finish you pick. And honestly one cracked slab in one yard doesn't prove much, plenty of paver jobs sink and shift after a few winters too. Give it a few more years before you crown yourself the winner.
