Visited a friend's backyard shed build and noticed something clever with their gutter system

I stopped by my buddy's place in Denver last weekend to check out the shed he's been working on for 6 months. He ran a gutter from the roof down into a buried 50 gallon rain barrel tucked under the deck. What caught my eye was how he connected a second barrel with a simple overflow hose, no fancy pumps or valves. He said it cost him about 40 bucks total for the parts from the local hardware store. Has anyone else tried daisy chaining rain barrels like that, or did you go with a different setup?

Daisy chaining barrels works fine in theory but 50 gallons fills up fast during a Denver summer storm, you'd be surprised how quickly that overflow just dumps water onto your foundation anyway. I tried that exact setup and realized I needed a proper diverter or the whole thing was pretty pointless lol.

Thought I had it all figured out with daisy chaining too, but you're right that overflow is a sneaky problem. Watched my own setup just dump water right where I didn't want it during a big storm, totally defeating the purpose. Made me realize a proper diverter is basically non-negotiable if you don't want to mess with your foundation. Kinda embarrassing how long it took me to figure that out, honestly.
