Went to look at a friend's pergola kit and walked away shaking my head

Drove over to Jason's place near Tacoma on Saturday because he wanted my two cents on a pergola kit he found online for $700. The instructions were just 6 blurry pages and none of the pre-drilled holes matched the brackets, not even close. We spent 3 hours just shimming and re-drilling before I called it quits. How do companies sell these kits without ever test fitting the parts? Has anyone else gotten a kit that was basically scrap metal with a pretty box?
