Why does nobody talk about setting fence posts in a bucket of gravel?
I was chatting with my neighbor who just moved from Amarillo and he said his grandpa always set posts by dumping 80 pounds of gravel around the base instead of concrete, because water drains instead of pooling and rotting the wood. So I dug up one of my old posts that kept leaning after every rain and sure enough the concrete had cracked and trapped water for 3 years. Anyone actually done the gravel thing long term, does it hold up in heavy clay soil or am I about to watch my fence fall over in a stiff wind?
