Check if the movie is actually the funny bad cut before you invite 8 people over
I planned a whole night around a $3 thrift store DVD of a shark movie last month, and it turned out to just be boring bad, not funny bad, so everyone was on their phones by minute 40. The trick is hunting down the fan edit or the version with the weird dubbing first, so has anyone got a go-to way to tell them apart before you buy?
Does the back of the box say anything about the dub? That's honestly my first check before I even hand over my three bucks. If it lists a bunch of alternate languages or says "unrated" or has some weird runtime that doesn't match the normal one, that's usually a sign there's a goofier version floating around. Also flip it over and look for typos in the summary, because a sloppy release is way more likely to be the funny bad one. If the cover looks too clean and normal, it's probably just regular boring bad.
