Overheard my kid say 'practical effects look fake' and I felt old

My 14-year-old was scrolling through TikTok the other day and saw a clip from The Thing (1982) and said it looked "kinda fake and gross." I had to stop and explain that when I was his age, we thought that stuff was mind-blowing because it was real slime and rubber and puppets. It got me thinking about how bad movies from the 80s and 90s used to be fun because the effects were so goofy and you could see the seams. Now kids grow up on CGI so even a movie like The Room feels more nostalgic than actually bad to them. I showed him Birdemic last weekend and he was bored after 10 minutes which kinda stung. Has anyone else tried watching a classic bad movie with a teenager and had it totally flop? What do you show them instead?

Honestly I used to roll my eyes at people getting defensive about practical effects but now I get it. Watching my nephew yawn through Aliens made me realize we were just impressed by different things.
